Developing international competences in practice

International collaboration offers students valuable opportunities to develop skills that go beyond the classroom. But what does this look like in practice?

Nuffic recently published a revised model for international competences, providing a clearer picture of the knowledge, skills and attitudes students can develop through international and intercultural experiences. These competences are also relevant to the activities organised within Care About IT, where international collaboration and innovation come together.

One example is the international Care About IT hackathon, held online in March 2025. The event brought together students from the Netherlands, Estonia, Finland and Italy to work on challenges in healthcare and technology. By exchanging ideas, sharing knowledge and developing solutions together, students had the opportunity to gain experience in international collaboration without having to travel abroad.

Activities like this create opportunities to practise several competences highlighted in Nuffic's revised model, including intercultural communication, critical thinking and problem-solving.

Through initiatives creates opportunities for students to develop skills that are increasingly relevant in an interconnected world.
